Buck chamois from spring. I'm just packing my kit and heading back to this spot next week for 10 days in the wilderness.
Range day this morning to test my rifle ahead of the roar and rut. She's looking good! It's a 200m shoot, 5 shots, no sighters, hunting rifles only, called the 'Hong Tse 200' at NZDA Wellington's range. I came in a close 2nd place by 1 point. Stags, bucks and bulls, watch out.
Tui in the bush today.
Now for some reloading using my new powder dispenser. I think it took 50% off my workload and has a great trickle function. It's an RCBS Chargemaster.
Getting the 7mm Rem Mag ready this morning for the upcoming roar tops trip at the Wellington NZDA rifle range. Should be right now! It's time to plan and pre-pack my gear.
Nice hut and alpine setting. It's all fixed and clean now after a weekend's volunteer work with @nzda_wellington_branch crew. We cut and marked most of the track but had to leave early due to the pending storm. No deer or deer sign, in stark contrast to when I was there 3 years ago.
Tararua tops.
A 3-9x40 gloss Leupold seems to be a good fit for the Mauser so I'll mount it and then see how it shoots. I confess that I like the styling of the older Leupolds. I must be getting old.
My 257 Roberts built on a vz33 Mauser 98 action gets reblued and put together by the same hands that made it decades ago. It's a fine old sporter converted by Alan Carr, master gunsmith, who did the metal work. Kevin Gaskell, crafted the walnut stock. Both of these gentlemen no longer make these rifles because they would cost over $20,000 today. Since owing it, I've had to wait a long time for Alan to have time. It was in a bit of a well used state and needed to get refinished. I cannot wait to put a scope on it and take it out deerstalking again. It came with a beaten up Leupold M8 but I might top it off with with a gloss Leupold VX1 3x9x40. My buddy Tim, who volunteers with me at the NZDA Heritage Trust, helped to prepare the rifle when he sandblasted it. The cumulative man hours of work...
Scrub hunting on a wet day. Located a red deer yearling and carried out the prime venison. One more deer this summer and my freezer will be full for the year ahead.
Picture perfect clearing. Shot this fallow deer at 230 meters with my 243 leaning off a manuka tree to get over the scrub and regen bush.
Deer camp. Swipe to see camp meat and valley views.
